Accounting 101

The greatest gifts, not easily lost,
Are those from the heart—regardless of cost.
Mere words on paper, a rhyme or a tune,
Remind us of summer and things done too soon.

We count our possessions and things left undone.
Then total the numbers in search of a sum.
In dollars and cents all fortunes are small.
Life, love, and friendship account for it all.

Neath warm summer skies we glide down life’s stream.
As we near the end it seems but a dream.
The greatest things we gave to each other
Were gifts of ourselves, not those cross the counter.
